You know what works. But is it still working?
If you’ve been teaching for a while, chances are you’ve developed a go-to lesson format — something that feels reliable, efficient, and solid. Maybe you start with a recap, introduce a new goal, offer a briefing, and then head out to apply it on the road.
It works. But if your Standards Check is approaching, or you’re feeling like your lessons aren’t quite landing, here’s a tough question worth asking:
Is your planning still purposeful — or has it just become predictable?
The Problem with Habitual Planning
The DVSA framework rewards instructors who think actively about lesson goals, pupil needs, and real-world context. But when you’ve delivered hundreds of lessons, your planning muscle can slip into automation. You might be:
• Repeating structures without tailoring them
• Defaulting to “safe” topics that don’t stretch your pupil
• Skipping opportunities to link lesson goals to meaningful progress
And here’s the learning: it doesn’t mean you’re doing anything wrong. It just means your planning might not be evolving with your pupils — or with your own development.
Signs You Might Be in a Planning Rut
If any of the following feel familiar, it might be time to reflect deeper:
🚗 You can plan a lesson in under 2 minutes — but it feels like ticking boxes
🛑 You often leave the “why this lesson now?” question unanswered
🧩 You struggle to link today’s lesson with a longer-term goal
🔁 Your lessons look very similar from week to week — even for different pupils
💭 You avoid planning around things like mindset, risk, or real-life scenarios
What the DVSA Actually Looks For
In the Lesson Planning section of the Standards Check, the examiner isn’t judging whether you follow a script. They’re watching for whether your lesson:
• Matches the pupil’s current learning needs and goals
• Has a clear structure that adapts to what happens in real time
• Builds on previous knowledge with progression in mind
• Links theory and practice meaningfully
• Encourages the pupil to take ownership of their learning
This isn’t about complexity. It’s about intentionality.
A Real Example: Same Lesson, Different Depth
Let’s say you’re planning a lesson on roundabouts.
For many ADIs, a typical structure might look like:
• Version 1 (Habit): Cover basic approach, mirror-signal-manoeuvre, centre lane positioning, then practise three roundabouts.
That’s a solid, familiar routine — and often gets the job done. But with just a small shift in framing, that same lesson could serve a deeper purpose:
• Version 2 (Intentional): Today’s goal: “Use roundabouts to help this pupil handle split-attention and improve risk anticipation.” You might frame it around pressure, invite the pupil into goal-setting, and adjust your pace depending on how they respond.
This isn’t about scrapping your structure — it’s about reconnecting it to the “why” behind your pupil’s development.
Both are technically “roundabout lessons” — but only one shows the kind of planning the Standards Check rewards.
The Deeper Risk
The more automated your planning becomes, the easier it is to disconnect from what your pupil actually needs that day. You may miss:
• What they’re really struggling with (which isn’t always what you’ve planned)
• Opportunities to coach mindset, risk, or reflection
• Moments to tie learning back to the bigger picture — the life they’ll live after the L plates come off
Reframing the Standards Check
What if you saw your next SC not as a test of technique — but as a test of connection?
The ability to connect lesson goals with pupil needs.
To connect structure with progress.
To connect your experience with a live, reflective process.
That starts with planning. But not just any planning.
Take It Further: Lesson Planning that Actually Reflects You
Coachubl’s Lesson Planning Module isn’t about templates or scripts. It’s built to help you:
• Re-examine your default structures
• Reconnect your planning to real progress
• Reflect on your Standards Check prep in a way that’s personal, not prescriptive
If you’re ready to rethink what planning means for you — this is where it starts.

We’d love to hear your thoughts. What helped? What got you thinking? Your feedback shapes future content.
In 2025, Coachubl became the first platform in the UK driving instruction industry to actively integrate neuroscience-informed coaching into reflective support for instructors.
Drawing on decades of applied experience in cognitive science, learning theory, and coaching psychology, the platform was built to go beyond templates — helping instructors build memory, insight, and confidence in ways that actually stick.
From reflective SC modules to journaling tools and micro-habit practices, Coachubl’s approach is rooted in how the brain learns, changes, and sustains growth — not just how the DVSA assesses it.
This isn’t just coaching with buzzwords. It’s a model built on real science, lived experience, and a belief that better thinking creates better teaching.
